The National Roofing Contractors Associations (NRCA) suggests that a homeowner inspects his or her roof twice a year – once at the beginning of Spring and again at the beginning of the Fall. Why? Even the strongest and most durable roof has its weaknesses, which is why we here at Rusco have created a list of some red flags that mean you should get a new roof.

Signs You Need a New Roof

  1. The Inside. Starting on the inside of your home, grab the flashlight and head up to the attic. If the inside of your roof is sagging, if there are holes that let you see the outside, water damage marks or dark spots and trails, it’s time to repair your roof!
  2. Physical Wear. Take the ladder out of the shed and get on top of the outside of your roof. Search your roof for cracks, curling, blistering and loose or missing shingles. If you find any spots like these, call your contractor. It’s time for a new roof!
  3. Mold and Algae. If you live in a humid climate, search your roof for algae and mold. Algae and mold thrives in humid climates and can weigh down and damage the infrastructure of your roof. If you find spots with mold and algae, then it’s probably time to call your contractor!
  4. Shingle Granules. Check inside your gutters. An early sign of roof wear and tear are shingle granules. They look like large grains of sand that came from your shingles. If you find these clogging up your gutters, it’s time to call the contractor!

While we’ve described a few common signs of a wearing roof, there are many, many more. The best way to make the assessment of whether or not you need a new roof is to call someone who knows what signs to look for. Our staff of contractors at Rusco can help you determine whether or not its time for a new roof or if you simply need a few repairs.
