The roof is one of the most essential systems in your home. It protects your entire house and all of its other systems, components, and parts, from weather and other damage. However, when your roof isn’t functioning as it should, that can lead to serious trouble. Here are some signs that your roof may be about to experience some leaks, or that it is already actively leaking.

Missing Shingles or Roof Pieces

No matter what type of roof you have, if it has come loose in any way, it can lead to leaks and moisture damage to the roof decking. Asphalt shingles, clay tiles, metal roofing—it doesn’t matter the material. If it’s missing, it’s a prime spot for moisture and other damages to make their way into the home.

Make sure that you inspect your roof regularly to look for missing parts that need to be put back into place. If you do have tiles or shingles missing, get them replaced as soon as possible, and make sure that the underlayment is checked to ensure that there is no further damage before they are replaced.

Damaged or Missing Gutters, Flashing, or Covers

If your roof is lined by gutters but those gutters are damaged or clogged with leaves, it could be leaving excess moisture on your roof that you don’t need. Flashing and covers that are damaged can also lead to roof leaks, so have those inspected regularly and repaired at the first sign of trouble. If your roof has flashing along the peaks and angles, check that for damage or potential issues, too.

Dripping Sounds

If you’re hearing dripping sounds, it’s way past time for preventive maintenance. This likely means there’s a leak somewhere. It could be coming from your roof if there are damaged or missing shingles, tiles, or pieces. It might even be “raining” on your walls if your vent stack cover has failed and the water is coming right down the stack into the home. If you hear water, you need to call for emergency help right away. Stop the water in its tracks and reduce further damage until you can get the cause repaired.

Roofs are designed to be durable and provide years of protection. However, they can also have issues with leaks over time due to damage, weather, age, and other factors. Keep an eye on your roof with regular inspections to avoid any serious issues. If you run into any issues make sure to call the experts at Rusco Window and Doors!
